Tools for Alignment
Depending on the depth of alignment needed between standards and resources, OSPI has developed a variety of tools to help educators.
- The Basic Alignment tools provide a means to check if instructional materials or a course design are aligning to the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and the Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). The EALRs, Components, and GLEs are listed along with space to note additional resources that are necessary to meet the standards and ensure student achievement.
- The Alignment with Evidence of Learning tools include the items from the Basic Tools, but allow educators to review materials more specifically by listing the evidences of learning for each grade level standard.
- The Instructional Materials Alignment tools are designed to provide a process to confirm how well instructional materials align to the Washington State learning standards. Each standard is listed and space is provided to identify evidence or other pertinent information.
- Finally, the Professional Development tools can be used to assist teachers in evaluating how well their students are doing in regards to the standards and can also be used when setting professional growth goals. It becomes extremely powerful when all teachers within a grade level or building can provide accurate information and contribute this data to create a grade level, building, or even a district profile. This larger profile can then provide specific guidance on where professional development resources should be focused and assist in determining specific goals for school improvement planning.
